Komiza is located deep in a bay on the western part of the island, beneath the Hum hill. Komiza is, with its 1700 inhabitants, a typical Mediterranean settlement with narrow streets, houses next to the harbour surrounded by beautiful beaches. The mild Mediterranean climate makes staying in Komiza pleasant all year long. Along the eastern coast of the Komiza bay stretch gravely beaches with fresh water springs: Gusarica, Nova pošta, Velo žalo. Fishing has always been the pride of Komiza and the Fishing museum located in an old Venetian tower on the waterfront stands as proof. Traditional fishing equipment is exhibited in the museum. A replica of the Komiza fishing gajeta falkuša (type of Dalmatian sailing boat) was presenting Croatian sea heritage on the world exhibition EXPO 1998 in Lisbon. On the 6th of December (St. Nicholas day) Komiza hosts an annual torching of boat in front of the St. Nicholas church. The island history is politically and economically linked with fishing on the one side and viticulture on the other and the quality of sorts vugava or plavac mali has been known since antiquity.
In recent years agro tourism has been developing in dozens of homesteads on Vis and Biševo. Along with homemade wine culinary specialities: kOmiska pogača (traditional salty pie), baked food, grilled fish, fažol (beans) and manistra na brujet (typical stew) are also served. Gourmets will be very happy in Komiza. Catering facilities have a daily offer of fresh fish and meat, vegetables from domestic cultivation all spiced with quality homemade olive oil. Some of the more famous taverns are "Bako", restaurant "Jastožera", tavern "Barba"and many others. Sport and activity lovers can choose between paragliding, horseback riding, nature walking and scuba diving "Issa diving". Around Vis there are twenty and more locations – museums in sea depths with sunken planes, sailboats, submarines and battle ships that you can experience.
If you wish to find entertainment and culture be sure to visit the Fishing museum and check out the programme of the Komiza cultural summer when you can hear the klapa music coming from every tavern. For more than 25 years an International school of ballet takes place in Komiza where participants from all over the world gain knowledge and achieve dancing perfection in classical ballet and pop and modern jazz.
And that is not all; yachtsmen will be pleased to hear that the harbour gives safe berths that shelter from north and east winds but unfortunately it is completely open to the north west. The southern wind can thus cause unpleasant waves in the harbour. Because the bay is open and because of its depth building a new harbour is complicated.
